The benefits of sleep

Before I get into the evidence based part of this. I want to talk about sleep from my own personal experience. As someone who considered himself a “late night person”

I cannot begin to tell you the positive benefits proper sleep has had on my energy levels and mood, as someone who suffered with depression and anxiety, sleep has really helped me.

I used to be so irritable, foggy minded and up and down in mood swings, I never thought it could be linked to poor sleep.

I now aim to be in bed by latest 11pm, which is still a little late but I’m constantly working on it. A proper night sleep allows me to wake earlier feeling more energised and ready to start my day.

Sleep can
  • Increase cognitive function
  • Helps repair the body after physical activity
  • Helps regulate hormones including our hunger hormones which help regulate our appetite
  • Increase mood and productivity
  • Increase energy levels
Tips for sleeping better
  • Avoid electronics in the bedroom when getting ready to sleep. Scrolling social media whilst in bed will wake the brain up, exactly the opposite of what you need!
  • Leave your phone in another room. It’ll take away the temptation of having a quick check
  • Make sure your room isn’t too hot or too cold, constantly rolling around in the night disrupts sleep
  • Try to eat your last meal 2-3 hours before sleeping
  • Try to avoid drinking too much liquid in the evenings, constantly having to pee interrupts sleep
  • Avoid caffeine in the evening. Some people are fine sleeping after coffee, most people aren’t!
  • Meditation. Even just 5-10 minutes before sleep can help you calm the mind

Ultimately, everyone’s sleep patterns are different. I’ve tried to avoid being really generic with my advice but like I said, take it from me, someone who didn’t respect sleep, the benefits of proper sleep can really change your life.
